Us Open Federer

NEW YORK -- Roger Federer is one cool customer.

The temperature climbed into the 90s yet again Thursday at Flushing Meadows, and the guy showed up for work wearing a warm-up jacket.

Then he put in his 1 hour, 41 minutes on court, dismissing 104th-ranked Andreas Beck of Germany, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, with the help of 15 aces, to ease into the third round of the U.S. Open.

"It's about just saving your energy for the really big match coming up, maybe the next one," Federer said, perhaps mindful that he was pushed to five sets in the opening round at Wimbledon in June before eventually losing in the quarterfinals at a second consecutive major tournament.

He dropped all of seven games in the first round of the U.S. Open, and the owner of a record 16 Grand Slam titles is feeling pretty good about things at the moment.

"It's the perfect start, sure. I played Monday, had two days off. I had another easy one physically today, and here I am in the third round feeling like I'm completely in the tournament," said Federer, a five-time U.S. Open champion and the only man left in the field who has won it.

"I got a sense for how the court speed is again. I got the sense of the crowd and the wind now as well. I played one night, one day. I have all the answers after two matches."

In other words, let everyone else sweat it out.

Like Kei Nishikori, the 147th-ranked qualifier from Japan, who fought cramps in his racket-holding right hand and elsewhere while taking a minute shy of five hours to wrap up a 5-7, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over 11th-seeded Marin Cilic.

"It was very humid. It wasn't easy to get the oxygen," said Cilic, a U.S. Open quarterfinalist last year, and an Australian Open semifinalist in January.

The 20-year-old Nishikori began feeling his muscles tighten in the second set but didn't really begin worrying until after trailing 2-1 in sets.

"I was thinking about it in fourth set, mostly: 'Even if I win this, I have to play one more set. It's not going to be easy for me, you know, cramping,'" said Nishikori, who reached the fourth round two years ago, the first Japanese man since 1937 to get that far at the U.S. Open. "But I was able to fight through."

His was one of a handful of upsets on Day 4 of a tournament that is quickly accumulating surprises.

Beatrice Capra, an 18-year-old from Ellicott City, Md., imitated 2009 U.S. Open darling Melanie Oudin and ousted No. 18-seeded Aravane Rezai of France, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

No. 22 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez lost to Patty Schnyder, while winners included 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, '08 runner-up Jelena Jankovic and '10 Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva.

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, like Federer, didn't waste any time on court, blanking 84th-ranked Chang Kai-chen, 6-0, 6-0.

At 371, Capra is the lowest-ranked woman left. She's also the youngest -- and not only is she making her Grand Slam debut, she's playing in the main draw of a tour-level event for the first time.

She said she "watched every second" as Oudin, then 17, reached the quarterfinals 12 months ago.

"I really look up to Melanie," said Capra, who earned a wild card from the U.S. Tennis Association by winning an eight-entrant playoff. "You know, it was really inspiring to me."

One of the women Oudin knocked off in 2009, three-time major champion Maria Sharapova, could await Capra in the third round.

Sharapova was scheduled to play her second-round match Thursday night, before '08 Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic took his turn under the lights.

Among those winning in the afternoon were Richard Gasquet, a former top-10 player who eliminated No. 6-seeded Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2; and Robin Soderling, a two-time French Open runner-up who beat American Taylor Dent, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

The No. 5-seeded Soderling's next opponent will be 48th-ranked Thiemo de Bakker, who advanced Thursday when Ivan Dodig quit in the fourth set because of cramping.

Tom Brady Car Accident

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady suffered a car accident earlier today and luckily for him, he got out without any injuries. A passenger on the other car involved in the accident wasn’t so lucky and is currently hospitalized with serious injuries.

The crash took place minutes before 6:30 am EDT just three blocks away from Brady’s home in Boston. Brady was driving his Audi sedan and the other car was a minivan.
Right now the accident is under investigation by police, so some details are still fuzzy. But he was expected to attend team practice.  According to people present at the scene, Tom Brady pulled some stuff from his car and ten was picked up by a vehicle.

Matt Barnes Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes has been arrested yesterday on domestic violence charges after police responded to a phone call that directed them to his home in Sacramento.

Police found Barnes and a woman, who is presumed to be his girlfriend, both with injuries.  Police determined that the player was the primary aggressor and detained him.  But Barnes is fighting the charges against him saying he is the victim of this case.
A reporter from Sacramento News 10 revealed the player responded to a text message proclaiming his innocence:
“U know any domestic violence situation 9 outa 10 times the man gets arrested. That’s the case here I was the victim but still got arrested. No matter what I say people are gonna think what they want…”
Then he posted on his Twitter account:
“DON’T LET YOUR EARS WITNESS, WHAT YOUR EYES DIDN’T SEE!!!”
Matt Barnes was released after paying a $50,000 bond.

Lauren Graham Talks About Peter Krause

Lauren Graham and Peter Krause are both stars in the show “Parenthood”, which talks about the joys and hardships of parenting. But well, they are more than co-stars, as romance has flourished between the two. In the October issue of Redbook magazine Lauren Graham opened up about their relationship.

“It’s a lot, to work with somebody and spend time with them, too. One of the things that’s been so fun is that it’s so easy.” Says Graham about working together. She added that they met 15 years ago and they felt a connection but didn’t got together due to shyness and timing.
“I think we liked each other [but] he asked me over to his house to play a board game – and that’s exactly what we ended up doing,” she says. “So I was like, ‘This guy doesn’t like me. Who actually plays a board game?’… The timing wasn’t right. I don’t think either of us was ready.” Hmm… maybe he needed some seduction tips!
But now the situation is different: “Nobody knew about it for awhile, because we like to be at home, cooking and not going out, I’ve also been really protective of it, because it’s important that you can buy us as brother and sister on the show.”

LFO Singer Dies of Leukemia

Rich Cronin, who many of you may remember as the LFO singer has sadly passed away after losing a battle against leukemia treatments. Back in the days Cronin became known for his hit “Summer Girls” which remained on the top of the Billboard charts for six weeks!

In 2005, Rich Cronin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, and started leukemia treatments.  He also started the Rich Cronin Hope Foundation which he used to expand awareness on leukemia, and educated people to donate blood and bone marrow to help others in need.

Koran Burning Florida

The “Koran Burning in Florida” problem continues, and today is the scheduled day for this act that has already been condemned by many notable names, including president Barack Obama. Afghans have protested burning a USA flag, so imagine what will happen if Terry Jones plans continue as planned.

Obama called the plan today a “recruitment bonanza for al Qaeda,”. While other Christian pastors have distanced from Terry Jones saying that they do not condone the action, and it doesn’t represent Christ at all.
Jones has said that he would reconsider his request if he gets a call from the White House, so this is starting to look like a hostage situation…
But Jones is not alone.  A copycat named Rev. Bob Old of Springfield, Tennessee has also announced similar plans for Saturday, and adds that he will upload a picture of the event.
“If they want to have their religion, they can have it somewhere else,” said Old “I believe that other religions are a threat to our faith and our beliefs,” Old is the head of an evangelical ministry called Disciples of Christ.

Colorado Wildfire: 169 Homes Destroyed!

The Colorado wildfire that spread over the last few days has continued its destructive path, bringing down 169 homes according to latest reports.  Earlier on today, resident were allowed to temporarily go back to their homes, while firefighters are making progress in controlling the fire.

“The wind event tonight, we could be off to the races,” said Rob Bozeman, field observer with the Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District.
The wildfire affected around 3,500 people who had to spend four days away from their homes while the Colorado wildfire took everything from them. Lack of information for them didn’t help them, and some of the residents managed a way to reach and check their homes.
The change in weather still makes it impossible for people to stay in their homes, so they are taking advantage of this opportunity to retrieve any important belongings they might have inside.

Stem Cell Research Allowed to Continue by U.S. Court

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington put today a hold on the ruling by District Judge Royce Lamberth who banned stem cell research funding. This is a research that involves human embryonic stem cells.

The ruling by Lamberth was announced last month, following information that the research would involve destroying human embryos. Obama had hoped research to continue in hopes to find new cures for different diseases with the new information.
“The purpose of this administrative stay is to give the court sufficient opportunity to consider the merits of the emergency motion for stay and should not be construed in any way as a ruling on the merits of that motion,” the appeals court wrote in its decision.

Marvin Sapp Wife MaLinda Dies of Colon Cancer

Gospel singer Marvin Sapp’s wife MaLinda has sadly passed away today after losing the battle against colon cancer. 92.1 Praise Houston first broke the sad story and released a statement saying the following:

“It’s with our deepest sympathy that we inform you that Pastor Marvin Sapp’s wife MaLinda Sapp has passed on today after battling colon cancer.
It was confirmed on the Lonnie Williams show today. An official press release has not been issued yet but more details will be coming on the Yolanda Adams Morning show tomorrow morning!
Earlier this year, Marvin Sapp was testifying of how his wife, MaLinda, was given a clean bill of health by doctors after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in 2009. But then, those health concerns resurfaced and Marvin Sapp requested intense, around-the-clock prayer.”
Marvin Sapp became popular as part of the group Commissioned and is best remembered for his gospel hits “Never Would Have Made It” and “The Best in Me”.

Vikings vs Saints, Thursday Night Schedule

Regular season football is here, and the NFL has set up a fantastic opener game in which we will see the Vikings go against the Saints. The match is scheduled to take part at the Super Dome in New Orleans.

The Minnesota Vikings will be playing with some of the players out due to injuries.  Among them are top WR Sidney Rice (who is in a 2-month recovery period after hip surgery) and Percy Halvin (who had problems with migraine headaches).
Brett Fare on the other hand has said that the Saints should be the favorites to win this opening game:
“Yeah, you know, I would have to give the edge to the Saints, first of all, as far as first game, where are you from a team standpoint overall as far as chemistry and things of that nature,”
Well let’s hope the New Orleans Saints aren’t suffering from the dreaded Super Bowl hangover!

Lina Morgana (PHOTOS) Lady Gaga Controversy

Lady Gaga is being accused by Yana Morgana of stealing the “dark side” of her daughter, singer Lina Morgana, who committed suicide in 2008 by jumping from Staten Island hotel.   The mother claims that Lady Gaga collaborated with her daughter before she became a pop icon.

Yana Morgana assures Gaga stole the “dark side” which was present in her daughter and has acquired it as her own. She goes as far as claiming that Gaga is holding on to Lina’s soul, who passed away when she was just 19.

In an interview with the New York Post, the mother says:
“I’m doing this because I want to keep her spirit alive. Lady Gaga is holding Lina’s soul, and I want her soul to be free.”
Yana also adds that the Gaga of that era didn’t wear the kind of clothes she now shows everywhere, including lingerie and wigs. But she has now embraced the style of Lina to become famous.  The woman is not seeking money or to sue Gaga, but only wants the music of her daughter to be known.

“Here You Have” Virus Email

There’s a new virus email that appears in your inbox with the subject field saying “Here you have”.  It seems it has appeared in the email accounts of multiple people since it became a highly searched item on the Web!
Well, as you may have guessed, this is nothing but an email virus, so the best course of action is to avoid opening it and just delete it.  Do the same with future emails with the same subject line. It has been known that the body of the message reads:
“Hello: This is The Document I told you about, you can find it Here.http://www.sharedocuments.com/.”
If you opened the message, chances are you are already infected, so it would be a good idea to use up-to-date antivirus software to deal with the infection. You could also try some free malware removal programs that might help you trace worms, Trojans, or other kind of computer viruses.

Sarah Shourd to Be Released

Iranian officials have confirmed ABC News that Sarah Shourd will be released, after being imprisoned in Iran for over a year.  According to the network, the information given didn’t give a specific date but said that it was going to happen “very soon”. As you may remember Shourd is one of the three hikers that were detained.

A text message sent to journalists by an Iranian official early in the day, announced the news:
“Offering congratulations on Eid al-Fitr. The release of one of the detained Americans will be at Saturday, 9 a.m. at the Estaghlal hotel.”
Back in May, we received news from Sarah Shourd, saying that she was suffering from depression and also had a health problem. A spokesman for the family confirmed this information and detailed that Shourd has found a lump in her breast, though it was not known if this was cancer.
“We have seen the news reports and are urgently seeking further information,” the hikers’ mothers said in a statement posted on Facebook “We hope and pray that the reports are true and that this signals the end of all three of our children’s long and difficult detention. Shane, Sarah and Josh are all innocent and we continue to call for their immediate release, so that they can return home together and be reunited with our families.”
