The season finale ‘The Next Food Network’ airs Sunday at 9PM ET, and if you’ve been watching since the first episode, you know that it’s been a good competition. All the three finalists — Aarti Sequeira, Herb Mesa, and Tom Pizzica — seem to have a good shot at winning the top prize.

We have our own thoughts about who would excel with his or her own Food Network television show, but if you’ve studied the judges’ reaction, one candidate seems to have the inside track to victory.

1. ‘The Next Food Network Star’ Will Be … Aarti Sequeira.

More than any other contestant, Aarti has won over the judges. They admire her tenacity and grace. They gushed over her food last Sunday during the ‘Iron Chef America’ challenge. Even though she’s not a chef and has no experience in a professional kitchen — and she does not work quickly — they have overlooked the negatives and appreciated the positives. Yes, she has failed spectacularly, like serving mushy rice, but they’ve always moved her along.

What’s the reason for the pass? Perhaps it’s that background as a CNN producer. Also Aarti’s proposed show, ‘Aarti’s Party,’ would be an Indian-themed program, which is a niche that’s yet to be covered by any other Food Network star. Aarti would represent the kind of expansion into other kinds of food that the network wants.

Finally, Aarti’s vivaciousness and bright smile have a strong telegenic appear. When you compare her to Giada DeLaurentiis or Rachael Ray, you can see a similarity and Aarti seems well-suited to promoting the network and her brand — given some PR schooling and confidence-building.

Margaret o Brien

For Turner Classic Movies‘ Margaret O’Brien Day on Sunday, Aug. 15, TCM will present the television premiere of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). Joke.
But then again, I don’t think they’ve shown Meet Me in St. Louis in at least two weeks, which almost makes the Sunday showing of the classic Vincente Minnelli musical seem like a premiere.
In addition to MMiSL, TCM (as part of its “Summer Under the Stars” series) will be showing 12 other movies featuring the young actress, who happened to be one of the top box-office attractions in the United States in the mid-’40s. [FullMargaret O'Brien schedule.]
Now, some people can’t stand Margaret O’Brien — smiling through her tears, crying atop her smile. Others find her the best child performer there ever was. (O’Brien won a special miniature Oscar at the 1945 ceremony.)
I’m in the middle ground. I haven’t watched many of O’Brien’s vehicles — most of those made at MGM. Of the ones I’ve seen, I found her pretty believable and not at all cloying.
Most child actors/actresses have the ugly habit (I think they do it on purpose) of bringing out the axe murderer in me. O’Brien didn’t do that in, say, the aforementioned Meet Me in St. Louis or Music for Millions (best line: “You’re gonna have a baybee”).
Among the O’Brien movies I’ve seen that TCM will be showing on Sunday, the one I’d most recommend (for those who have already watched the entertaining Meet Me in St. Louis about a dozen times) is George Cukor‘s Heller in Pink Tights.
This 1960 Western made at Paramount is neither one of Cukor’s best efforts nor one of the best movies set in the American West. But never mind all that. The gaudy, overblown Heller in Pink Tights features an eclectic cast that includes Sophia Loren, Anthony Quinn, ultra-handsome Steve Forrest (excellent as The Other Man), Eileen Heckart, O’Brien (then 23 years old, as Heckart’s daughter), and veterans Edmund Lowe and Ramon Novarro.
Those names — and the work of production designer Gene Allen and cinematographer Harold Lipstein — are enough for me to recommend Heller.
“John Barrymore once told me that if I ever got a chance to appear in a film directed by George Cukor, it would be an experience I’d value,” Novarro would later say, “and I did greatly enjoy every moment working for Mr. Cukor.”
That can be seen on screen. In what amounts to a cameo, MGM’s former Ben-Hur delivers the film’s best performance as the greedy villain. Do check out Heller in Pink Tights.
Note: In Big City (1948), which co-stars Robert Preston, Danny Thomas, George Murphy, and pert Betty Garrett, Margaret O’Brien gets to sing something called “Ok’l Baby Dok’l.” The voice you hear, however, is Marni Nixon‘s, who would later dub Deborah Kerr (The King and I), Natalie Wood (West Side Story), and Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady).

Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera could find itself the unexpected beneficiary of a multimillion-dollar gift under the unusual terms of a Washington, D.C., heiress’s donation, according to several people familiar with the matter.

Betty Brown Casey’s donations to the Washington National Opera’s endowment came with a stipulation: Should that company fail to remain independent, the funds would be rescinded—and transferred to the Met.

That day could be on the horizon: The National Opera is in merger talks with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Wall Street Journal reported last week.

According to a person familiar with the matter, donations made by Mrs. Casey, the National Opera’s life chairman, constitute between one-half and two-thirds of the National Opera’s total endowment, which was $30.5 million at the end of its 2009 fiscal year. That would make the amount of the Met’s potential windfall between $15 million and $20 million.

A lawyer for Mrs. Casey, Brendan V. Sullivan Jr., referring to the opera, said: “I’m confident that they will abide by their written agreements.”

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the National Opera reiterated the sentiment. “Washington National Opera is grateful for the generosity of all of its donors, and abides by all terms related to all gifts,” said Michelle Pendoley.

Kennedy Center spokesman John Dow said he was unaware of any stipulations, and declined to comment further.

Through a spokesman, the general manager of the Met, Peter Gelb, declined to comment. The Met’s endowment at the end of fiscal year 2009 totaled $247 million, and the gift—if transferred—would represent a much-needed injection of funding for the company, which has been hammered by the recession. Its net assets declined 38% in the 2009 fiscal year.

Mrs. Casey, 83 years old, is the widow of Eugene B. Casey, a Maryland real-estate developer who served as a farm adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mrs. Casey’s motivation for the terms on her donations is unclear.

Megan McAllister and Phillip Markoff Story

Megan McAllister, the lady who once was engaged to alleged Craigslist Killer Phillip Markoff be. In the time of their engagement, both medical students were in Boston. Markoff was arrested in April 2009 and accused of murdering a masseuse he met on Craigslist in a hotel room in Boston.

McAllister maintained his innocence in various statements to the media soon after his arrest, though the wedding was known as off shortly after that. These days, she is back in the news mainly because Markoff committed suicide while in his cell in Boston. The 24-year-old medical student was pronounced dead by doctors following his reaction was not identified in his cell this morning.

“Markoff was alone in his cell and all evidence gathered so far indicates that he took his own life,” a statement said. “However, as with all such cases a comprehensive investigation be conducted to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death to be determined.”

Julissa Brisman:Philip Markoff commits suicide in Boston jail:The defendant “Craigslist Killer” Markov Philip committed suicide in prison Nashua Street in Boston, where he was detained pending trial in the killing of Julissa Brisman, according to Steven Tompkins, spokesman for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.

Markov, 24, was pronounced dead at 10:17 am. Although authorities are still investigating, Markov was alone in his cell, and all the evidence gathered so far indicates that it was suicide, said the statement released by Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
Authorities said Markov fired Brisman, 25, a masseuse in New York, who arrived in Boston after advertising for their services on Craigslist, three times with a pistol on April 14, 2009 after they fought in the doorway of his room on the 20 th floor of the Marriott Copley inBoston. The bullet pierced her heart. Prosecutors said Markov also battered head.

Markov was also accused of assaulting two other women he met through the site of classified advertising. His next court appearance was scheduled for a hearing in mid-September, according to John Salsberg, a lawyer inMarkov.

“I am shocked and saddened by this news,” said John Salsberg, a lawyer in Markov.

Salsberg declined to comment further.

Media surrounded the Nashua Street jail in the afternoon and evening as the prisoners held posters to the windows, commenting on the death of Marcus in.

One sign read: “I am still alive.”

Another said: “All the rapists must die.”

Markov has been on suicide watch shortly after his arrest almost a week after the murder.

In April 2009, Markov was examined by medical staff in jail and placed in a special cell under the surveillance camera after a correction officer saw the marks on his neck, though he tried to use shoelaces to hang himself, The Globe reported at the time.

In May, a prison official said that the Globe Markov was no longer segregated from other prisoners. He was acclimating well-played chess with other inmates, according to the official.

Police arrested Marco, who lived in Quincy, on April 20, 2009 after the termination of its Interstate 95 in Walpole. Markov told police that he was headed to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. His fiancee, Megan McAllister, was also in the car.

Markov and McAllister was taken to Boston in separate cars. It was held, and McAllister had been released. At his arrival the next day, Markov has pleaded not guilty to murder and armed robbery charges.

Markov, a former Boston University medical student, was also convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping in two similar incidents where the victims were not injured.

After a while John Morrison has to do with Spring Sheffield and he finds it hard against the big 280pounder. Sheffield grounds Morrison and then puts on a clinic. He Morrison winds down and then take him to suplex him back down. Sheffield gets a two count and then slows down his offense even more. Morrison is trying to get it going, but if he goes against the ropes Justin Gabriel a lethal kick lifts the platform high in the back of the head of Morrison’s. A huge clothesline from Sheffield and Morrison is out. R-Truth comes in and he did not last long as a skip Sheffield nails him again with a knockout clothesline. One, two, three. We have five against five. Chris Jericho comes in and does well initiall, but soon Wade Barrett against his former Pro. The race goes back and forth and both men are finally down. Barrett crawls like Jericho and Bret Hart in tags like Heath Slater. Bret comes in and goes full speed Slater continuous blows to the head of Slater in the corner. He then takes down Slater with a shovel and then hit a classic Bret Hart elbow. Bret then goes on to set up a sharpshooter, but Springsteen Sheffield is now encrypted and Wade Barrett introduced a steel chair into the ring. Bret Hart for the game already and he takes the chair to use for Sheffield. Hart then disqualified! Edge is already in the javelin at Sheffield hit and get the pin fall. Gabriel Justin Edge and then put on a good show. Gabriel gets the tag to Heath Slater but if this match is a four by four. Wade Barrett tags in and he and the Nexus to do a good job to keep Edge on the back foot. Barrett and Edge go at it for quite some time and Barrett makes a tag to David Otunga. Otunga comes in as arrogant, as usual, he takes lightly as Edge takes Edge down with Otunga a Dracula-like DDT. Edge tags Jericho and he pumps it to the crowd as he Otunga David Otunga and he did tap out with a Walls of Jericho! The benefit Team WWE. Jericho than his attack, but if he goes in the Heath Slater Jericho starts accidentally John Cena on the apron. Slater has already benefited and rolls up Jericho. One, two, three!
