Priyadarshini Mattoo:The Supreme Court on Wednesday commuted the death sentence the accused Santosh Kumar Singh in the sensational 14-year-old Priyadarshini Mattoo case of rape and murder, prompting a strong reaction from family and friends of the victim. Apex court bench of judges HS Bedi and CK Prasad Singh confirmed the conviction, the law student college for the murder and rape of Matt, his younger, but reduced the death sentence to life imprisonment, saying some things were in his favor.
“The belief persists,” the bench, adding, however, in our opinion, some things in favor of the applicant (Singh). We convert the death sentence in the punishment of life imprisonment. ”
Singh, the son of a former senior officer of IPS, has challenged his conviction and death sentence awarded by Delhi High Court who identified his acquittal by the trial court in this case.
Counsel appearing for the family Mattoo said that he will review a petition seeking treatment or enhancement of punishment after watching the verdict.
The verdict drew instant reaction from the victim’s father, who expressed satisfaction with the DIS-to commute the death penalty.
“I’m not satisfied with the proposal. This can be discussed only legal experts, it is quite obvious that even the Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the High Court of Delhi,” Chaman Lal Mattoo said.
“There was a variety of cases in which convicts managed to escape,” he said, adding: “It’s dangerous. The case had not met the right treatment apex court.”
Terming the verdict as a “failure”, the lawyer appearing for the victim’s family, said: “It was not an ordinary criminal, and therefore it (the deal) was the rarest category.”
