Women’s pair Anisa Sayyed and Rahi Sarnobat won top honors in the 25 meters pistol event, to give the country its second gold on the second day of competition. A total of 18 gold medals will be decided within a day of swimming (5), shooting (4), cycling (3), wrestling (3), weightlifting (2) and gymnastics (1).
A pair of men’s Omkar Singh and Deepak Sharma took home the silver in 50 m pistol event pair.
With these three medals tally in India goes to 7 – two gold, three silver and two bronze.
Sonia Chanu and Suken Day were bags of silver and Sandhya Rani and B. Srinivas Rao, a bronze in weightlifting event on Monday, the first day of competition.
Abhinav shot an impressive 100 series, 98, 99, 100, 99 and 99 for counting of 595 points at Karni Singh shooting range.
Gagan, who is not in the best condition in 10-meter air rifle event, shot an outstanding sequence of 99, 100, 100, 99, 100 and 100, a total of 598 points.
Elated Bindra said that it was his best moment since winning the yellow metal in 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“Yes, of course. This is my best moment since winning gold in Beijing. Is always special to win a medal for the country. And this is the first time I have competition in such large events on Indian soil,” Bindra said soon after the sterling performance of the pair.
“I’m as happy as we are satisfied and look forward to our shows in the coming days from the game,” said Bindra, India’s first individual gold medalist. He graduated at the top of the podium in the 10 meters air rifle event at the Beijing Olympics.
Win a pair of silver Singh and Sharma scored a total of 1087 points. Singh has contributed 548 points and Sharma 539.
Indian shooters emerged the dominant force in the Melbourne Games, winning 27 medals, including 16 gold medals by helping countries achieve up to 50.
National coach Sunny Thomas was excited at the feat and said that the gold fever in India has just begun.
“This is just the beginning and the shooters will win many medals this time,” he said.
Silver in the men’s 10-meter rifle event was taken by James Huckle of England and Kenny Parr, while in Bangladesh Abdullah Al Baki and Mohammad Asif Husain received the bronze.
English pair managed 1174 points, closely followed by Bangladesh (1173).
