The Kansas City Chiefs ushered in a new era tonight in a dramatic pre-game celebration loaded with ties to the Kansas City region and nods to both the past and the future of Arrowhead Stadium. The show also honored the late Lamar Hunt, Founder of the Kansas City Chiefs.

At 8:55 p.m., the stadium lights at Arrowhead went down to indicate the beginning of the show, which included lasers, pyrotechnics, a stirring video tribute and a military flyover.

The documentary-style video was narrated by Overland Park, Kan. native Rob Riggle, best known for his television and movie appearances, including The Hangover and The Other Guys. It paid tribute to Chiefs fans, the vision of the Hunt family and Arrowhead Stadium, and was shot late one night in a dark, empty Arrowhead Stadium. Almost 2,000 fireworks erupted during the last minutes of the video, creating a spectacular light show.

“I’m so excited to be a part of the debut of the New Arrowhead,” said Riggle, “I am a lifelong Chiefs fan and it was great to be able to play a part in the opening festivities.”

Following the video, Chiefs Mascot KC Wolf ziplined into the stadium with assistance from members of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department. He was joined on the field by the Chiefs Cheerleaders and the Chiefs Rumble, as well as Warpaint.

A giant American flag was unfurled and presented by members of the Kansas City Missouri Police and Fire Departments and men and women of the Armed Forces, before Billy Ray Cyrus’ performance of the National Anthem.

And finally, the world famous Nightdippers of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Five (HS-5) flew over the stadium, illuminating the field with spotlights. The crew included Kansas City natives Lieutenant Robert Zubeck and Lieutenant Jeffrey Graverholt who recently returned from back-to-back deployments aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. The home port for the USS Dwight D Eisenhower is Norfolk, Virginia.

The pre-game festivities all led up to the kickoff of the regular season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football.

The video will be available for fans to view on kcchiefs.com later in the week and parts of it can be seen this Sunday on the Hy-Vee Chiefs Insider, the official pre-game show of the Kansas City Chiefs. Hy-Vee Chiefs Insider airs locally on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on KCTV-5 (CBS).

Rob Riggle was born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Overland Park, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s degree in theater and film and later went on to get his Master’s degree in Public Administration. In addition to his film work, he has appeared in several television projects including The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live.

Rob is a United States Marine Corps officer. He served in Liberia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. He has 20 medals and ribbons as a result of his service, including the Combat Action Ribbon. He is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves.
