Reports from the city have claimed that the temblor was quite strong, and jolted many awake. There have been reports of objects falling off of walls inside of houses, but thus far there have been no reports of any serious damage, but there have been reports of minor damage. The quake was followed by a series of considerably smaller aftershocks. Many residents left their house following the quake and elected to stay outdoors, rather than go back inside and risk injury.

Many residents in Christchurch lost power following the incident, and there have also been reports of sewer lines and water pipes being ruptured. A number of substations are offline, and city officials are working to fix everything and make the water system operational once again.
A small amount of structural damage to houses and buildings has been reported. Although the earthquake may have caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, officials are likely happy that there were no causalities.
