Phillip Markoff, the former medical student dubbed the “Craigslist killer” was found dead in his jail cell. According to reports, he died of an “apparent suicide.”

CBS News reports that Markoff was pronounced dead at about 10:17 a.m. ET by medics on Sunday. He was being detained at the Nashua Street Jail in Boston.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley released a statement saying Markoff “was alone in his cell and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life.”

The 23-year-old former Boston University medical student was charged with the April 14, 2009 shooting death and attempted robbery of Julissa Brisman, 25, and the April 10, 2009 armed robbery of a 29-year-old Las Vegas woman.

Brisman was a model from New York who advertised her services as a masseuse on Craigslist. She suffered blunt trauma to the head and was shot three times at close range at the Marriott Copley Place hotel.

Police reports indicate the woman from Las Vegas was robbed of $250 in gift cards and $800 cash at the Westin Copley Place hotel.

Both crimes were linked to ads placed on the popular Website Craigslist. Markoff was also charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to rob, use of a firearm while committing a violent crime, and possession of a handgun in connection with an attempted robbery at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, Rhode Island on April 16.

Later that month, after being arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in Walpole, Massachusetts, Markoff pleaded not guilty to the crimes.

Shortly after his arrest, he was placed on suicide watch after jail officials found shoelace marks on his neck.
