The recommendation was forwarded by Commissioner Priscilla Taylor last month to change the county charter to bring independently-elected county officials. In order to decrease the country budget the sheriff, tax collector, Palm Beach county property appraiser, county clerk and supervisor of elections should become under the control of the County Commission.
Palm Beach County property values, and the corresponding property taxes generated, are expected to fall about 12 percent countywide as the nation’s economic woes linger, according to 2010 estimates released Thursday. In April there was a release by Palm Beach County Property Appraiser Gary Nikolits, in the response of which a cut down of budget is decided. Currently, the County Commission must approve the total $4 billion county budget, but can’t tell the other county officials how to spend their money.
