Philip Markoff

(NECN: Scot Yount) - Philip Markoff's body was found this morning inside a Boston jail, and officials are saying he killed himself.

The District Attorney's office released a statement that said evidence gathered from Markoff's jail cell pointed to suicide. The statement said Markoff was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at 10:17 this morning.

The news comes one day after what would have been Markoff's first wedding anniversary. He was engaged to his college sweetheart, who later called off the wedding after his criminal allegations came in.

Markoff's trial was set to begin next March for the murder of Julissa Brisman, a woman who advertised erotic massages on Craigslist. Markoff was also facing charges for the robbery of a Las Vegas woman. Both crimes were reported in April 2009 and happened over a span of four days at a Copley square hotel.

Markoff had previously been on suicide watch right after his arrest when shoelace marks were found around his neck.
