Apple Announcement September 1

Apple Announcement September 1 Includes New iPod Touch 4th Generation, iTunes 10, New iPod Nano, and Apple TV- Another successful Apple event happened in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco California. As usual, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO delivered another speech revealing some of the new technological advancements developed by his company, Apple Computer, Inc.

Here are some of the keynotes in his speech announcing some of the newest Apple products such as iTunes 10, Apple TV, and iPod Touch 4th generation among others.

New Apple Stores – In his opening speech, Steve Jobs revealed that three new apple stores have been opened. The first one is located in Paris, near the Opera in which Apple spent 18 months just to restore it. The second new store is located in Shanghai, China and the third store is located in London, in Covent Garden.

New iOS 4.1 – Steve Jobs also introduced an upgrade to the iOS, the operating system software that Apple is using in its mobile devices. Accordingly, the upgrade to iOS, 4.1 fixes a lot of bugs in the previous versions including performance problems with the iPhone 3GS and the promixity sensor. In addition, a new development called high dynamic range (HDR) photos which allows camera to take three pictures simultaneously, and from there creates the best shot from a combination of the three will be available in the next iOS update.

iOS 4.2 for iPads – Come this November, Apple will be releasing iOS 4.2 which will be all about iPad, Apple’s innovative tablet PC which will include wireless printing.

New iPod Nano – Steve Jobs announced the new look of the iPod Nano. Accordingly, it will be smaller this time as compared to the previous versions. Aside from the size, Apple also replaced the “wheel” to make it a touch screen. The new iPod Nano will be available at a retail price of $149 for the 8GB version and $179 for the 16GB version. If you’re curious on how the new iPod Nano looks like, below is a sample photo of it.

New iPod Touch 4th Generation – Moving on to the widely expected New iPod Touch 4th generation, the new iPod Touch is now much thinner than the previous version and will have a feature available in iPhone 4 called Face Time that allows users to chat face to face using the newly installed front-camera. Aside from that, it will also have a back-camera and a retina display. The new iPod Touch 4G will cost $229 for 8Gb, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB and will become available next week.

iTunes 10 Update: There will be a new feature for iTunes which will become available in iTunes 10. A social music network called Ping, much like the famous Twitter, will allow iTunes user to follow and unfollow artists and friends, and see what music friends are listening to. Damon Darlin said that the layout of Ping will look like the same as Facebook, the number one social networking site nowadays. One of the best feature of Ping available in iTunes 10is that you can now buy songs right from someone’s mention of the song.

New Apple TV and Its Box – Steve Jobs also showed the new version of the Apple TV Box, about the size of two iPhones side by side and much smaller than the previous version of it. The new Apple TV will now cost just $99, a huge drop from the previous price of $200 and users can now rent tv shows as low as $0.99. Initially, shows from ABC and Fox will be available for the new Apple TV.

Apple TV: $99 Device

The new Apple TV is here, and it’s small, shiny, and pretty dang slick — but it’s not without its drawbacks. We just got to spend a bit of time with it following its debut at Apple’s press conference. So what’d I think? Join us after the jump for the first impressions.

The Good:

    * Oh man, this thing is small. You could smuggle this thing into a foreign country, if you know what I mean.
    * It’s silent. Dead silent.
    * The interface is easily one of the slickest I’ve seen on a media box, though it hasn’t changed much (outside of the new Netflix fun) since the release of Apple TV 3.0 in October of last year.
    * I don’t generally carea bout the aesthetics of media hardware; it goes in an entertainment center, where no one sees it. That said, this is one nice looking piece of kit.
    * Apple’s network was obviously optimized and stress-tested, but all of the streaming content started up damned quick. The picture quality was great, and there was no sign of any buffering jitters..
    * AirPlay support from iOS devices — that is, being able to stream video off an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch — was completely unexpected, and is really well implemented. Two taps, and it’s on your tv.
    * Netflix! A great feature for sure — though with everything from TVs to toasters coming with Netflix nowadays, it’s not exactly groundbreaking.

The Bad:

    * Though Steve nor anyone else at Apple would confirm it, this thing is almost certainly running iOS — and yet, it has no App Store (yet.) With Google entering this space with their Android boxes, third party apps were something we were really hoping for. I’d bet money on an Apple TV App Store launching eventually.

The Ugly:

    * Thanks to the new dark shiny coat, it seems to be a total dust/fingerprint magnet. Keep it in an entertainment stand and don’t paw at it all the time, and you should be fine.
    * No local storage. Mehhh. Streaming content over your network is great, but it requires a remote computer being on at all times. Of the few people I know who own Apple TVs who aren’t over 60, this is a pretty big ding against the whole concept. The winning formula is local storage and streaming — not either or.
    * The microUSB port, it seems, will solely be for servicing the hardware. No external drives.

Conclusion:

The new Apple TV is slick, tiny, and, at $99 bucks, comes in at a ridiculously reasonable price. That said, I probably wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who I thought could handle a more flexible piece of hardware. My grandma? Sure. My NZB-downloading friend who acquires all of his media through non-iTunes means? Probably not.

Tropical Storm Gaston

If Hurricane Earl and Tropical Storm Fiona were not enough to keep the National Hurricane Center busy, than Tropical Storm Gaston surely will be. The Storm was named this afternoon, and just complicates matters for the NHC who already have their hands full.

Tropical Storm Gaston, as of the 5 PM EST National Hurricane Center advisory, is located in the central Atlantic at 12.9°N 37.0°W. Currently it is a minimal tropical storm with winds of 40 miles per hours. It is moving due west at 15 miles per hour. The official track has Gaston moving slowly over the next 48 hours, before picking up forward speed on Saturday. The 5 day projected path brings Gaston about 300 miles East of the Leeward Islands on Monday. From there forecasts get more complicated. Several computer models have it entering the Caribbean Sea. As for intensity, it will likely strengthen to a category 1 hurricane by this weekend.

Michael Douglas Throat Cancer

Michael Douglas made an appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman Tuesday night and talked opening about his battle with throat cancer.  See the video of Michael Douglas on Letterman below.

Actor Michael Douglas was on David Letterman’s show to promote his latest movie but most of the discussion was about his cancer.

Douglas said he has stage 4 cancer and explained how he found out saying, “It had been bothering me for a while… In early summer, I had a really sore throat.”  The actor adds, “And I actually went through a litany of doctors and tests and they didn’t find anything.”

Michael went back to the doctor and explains, “A guy [told me to say] ‘ahhhh’ and he said, ‘Let me just take a little clip of that.’ And this all happened within three weeks, and I got a biopsy and they analyzed it – it’s a stage 4, which is intense, and so they’ve got to go at it…”

“Now when you said ’stage 4,’ I heard someone gasp,” David stated, asking, “Now, is stage 4 where you want to be or where you do not want to be?”

“Um, no. No, you like to be down at stage 1… but it has not — the big thing you’re always worried about is it spreading, so I am head and neck,” Michael explained. “I am above the neck, so nothing’s gone down, and the expectations are good… ”

At the end of their interview David Letterman stated, “Wow, boy, I feel like I want to do something for you.”  And asked, “Can I do something for you?”

“Ahh, give me a hug,” Michael said.

Big Ten Network has announced its broadcast schedule of the 2010-11 Big Ten Conference men’s basketball, beginning Monday Dec. 27 as Indiana hosts Penn State.

Big Ten Network will present 108 men’s basketball games, all in high definition with 61 intra-conference game telecasts including three contests at the 2011 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis.

After the Big Ten Network launch in August, 2007, every home Big Ten men’s basketball game has been produced for television or the internet, giving the Big Ten Conference the widest exposure of any conference in the nation.

The Big Ten Network’s weekly men’s basketball will be Super Wednesday doubleheaders, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, at 6:30 PM ET and 8:30 PM ET, beginning Jan. 5. Each Super Wednesday doubleheader will be preceded by a 30-minute Big Ten Tip-Off Show, presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, and followed by a post-game show.

The Big Ten Network will also broadcast games on most Tuesday nights, selected Thursdays and up to five games each weekend, during the conference season.

Big Ten Network President Mark Silverman said “With such an extensive schedule of games, our in-depth studio coverage and original programming, the Big Ten Network is the ultimate viewing destination for Big Ten basketball fans.”

The conference slate begins at 6:30 PM ET on Monday, Dec. 27, as Indiana hosts Penn State. The next day, Final Four contender Purdue travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face the Wolverines at 2 PM ET.

Once again, the Big Ten Network will televise three Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament games. The schedule includes the third game of the tournament at 7:30 PM ET on Thursday, March 10, involving the No. 6 and No. 11 seeds from Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The network will also carry the quarterfinal match-ups involving the tournament’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds on Friday night, March 12.

The Big Ten Network will tip-off the season with 44 games in 42 nights beginning Nov. 12. The network will televise the home openers for Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State and Purdue. Every Big Ten men’s basketball team will make at least 10 appearances on the linear network this season.

The network will stream all exhibition games and a limited number of non-conferences games on www.bigtennetwork.com. Many of those games will also air on a delayed basis through the network’s Student U initiative, giving Big Ten students real world television production experience. The dates, times and television arrangements for some of those games are pending, and will be posted on www.bigtennetwork.com once the schedule is finalized.

Discovery Channel Hostage

James Lee, a man upset by the Discovery Channel’s environmental programs took three people hostage at gunpoint at the company’s headquarter today.  Lee was shot and killed by police.  Read more on this story below.

James Lee was shot dead after holding three people hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarter.  Thankfully all three hostages are alive.

Sources at the Discovery Channel building said that SWAT members fired the shots that killed the suspect.

Officers spent hours attempting to negotiate with Lee after he went into the building at around 1 p.m. armed with a handgun and canisters strapped onto his body.

The suspect is James Lee, 43, who has protested at the Discovery site before.

Here’s James Lee’s crazy rant posted on his website:

The Discovery Channel MUST broadcast to the world their commitment to save the planet and to do the following IMMEDIATELY:

    1. The Discovery Channel and it’s affiliate channels MUST have daily television programs at prime time slots based on Daniel Quinn’s “My Ishmael” pages 207-212 where solutions to save the planet would be done in the same way as the Industrial Revolution was done, by people building on each other’s inventive ideas. Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both. Do all until something WORKS and the natural world starts improving and human civilization building STOPS and is reversed! MAKE IT INTERESTING SO PEOPLE WATCH AND APPLY SOLUTIONS!!!!

    2. All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs’ places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.

    3. All programs promoting War and the technology behind those must cease. There is no sense in advertising weapons of mass-destruction anymore. Instead, talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict. Again, solutions solutions instead of just repeating the same old wars with newer weapons. Also, keep out the fraudulent peace movements. They are liars and fakes and had no real intention of ending the wars. ALL OF THEM ARE FAKE! On one hand, they claim they want the wars to end, on the other, they are demanding the human population increase. World War II had 2 Billion humans and after that war, the people decided that tripling the population would assure peace. WTF??? STUPIDITY! MORE HUMANS EQUALS MORE WAR!

    4. Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn’t, then get hell off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??

    5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)

    6. Find solutions for Global Warming, Automotive pollution, International Trade, factory pollution, and the whole blasted human economy. Find ways so that people don’t build more housing pollution which destroys the environment to make way for more human filth! Find solutions so that people stop breeding as well as stopping using Oil in order to REVERSE Global warming and the destruction of the planet!

    7. Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to the overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until it sinks into the stupid people’s brains until they get it!!

    8. Saving the Planet means saving what’s left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies! You’re the media, you can reach enough people. It’s your resposibility because you reach so many minds!!!

    9. Develop shows that will correct and dismantle the dangerous US world economy. Find solutions for their disasterous Ponzi-Casino economy before they take the world to another nuclear war.

    10. Stop all shows glorifying human birthing on all your channels and on TLC. Stop Future Weapons shows or replace the dialogue condemning the people behind these developments so that the shows become exposes rather than advertisements of Arms sales and development!

    11. You’re also going to find solutions for unemployment and housing. All these unemployed people makes me think the US is headed toward more war.

Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.

For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human’s lifespan! THIS IS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!

It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis. Even one child born in the US will use 30 to a thousand times more resources than a Third World child. It’s like a couple are having 30 babies even though it’s just one! If the US goes in this direction maybe other countries will too!

Also, war must be halted. Not because it’s morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures. FIND SOLUTIONS JUST LIKE THE BOOK SAYS! Humans are supposed to be inventive. INVENT, DAMN YOU!!

The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.

Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.

The humans? The planet does not need humans.

You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!

I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it.

These are the demands and sayings of Lee.

Wow! That’s crazy!  Thank goodness all the hostages are alright!

James Lee, Dead in Discovery Channel

The man who entered the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., with a handgun and what appeared to be explosives Wednesday, taking several hostages, is being described in news reports as an “environmental activist.”

If so, his ideology is reminiscent of the infamous “Unabomber” – Theodore Kaczynski, now serving life in prison for a series of mail bombings that killed three people and injured 23 others.

The man in the Discovery Channel episode, identified by law enforcement officials as James J. Lee, apparently held beliefs similar to Kaczynski: that human population growth and modern industrial development imperil the planet.

Several hours after the episode began, Mr. Lee reportedly was shot and killed by sniper. Three hostages were released unharmed.

“The debate about the state of the planet is done,” Lee writes on his web site. “Global Warming is a reality. The massive extinction of animals is happening all over the world. Now let us begin the debate on how to save the planet. We can’t wait anymore, something must be done immediately! Let’s act on it right away; let this be a new chapter in the earth’s history. As human beings we must join together to save it.”

Lee’s focus on the Discovery Channel is not new.

For several years, he had been protesting outside the company’s headquarters, carrying signs and placards critical of the channel’s programming. In March 2008, he was fined $500 and given six months supervised probation on a charge of disorderly conduct. The judge in the case ordered him to stay 500 feet away from Discovery Communications.

But apparently that did not deter him from continuing his critical focus on the Discovery Channel and its programming.

“The Discovery Channel is a big part of the problem, not the solution,” he wrote. “Instead of showing successful solutions, their broadcast programs seem to be doing the opposite. Shows like ‘Cash Cab’ and ‘Dirty Jobs’ serve as diversions to keep the focus off what is really important, which is Global Warming and Animal Extinction. Why do they broadcast a show like “Future Weapons” that only promise to destroy the planet even more? And their new lineup “Planet Green” is all about more products and other substandard solutions.”

Among Lee’s demands: "All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs' places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it."

Most of the 1,900 Discovery employees had been evacuated before police negotiations began.

Discovery Communications includes the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel, and Planet Green networks. Discovery Communications officials could not be reached regarding the hostage episode or Lee’s angry manifesto against the company.
