A powerful storm swept through part of New York City on Thursday evening, killing one person, flipping vehicles, and uprooting trees.
Many observers believe that the storm produced a tornado, based on eyewitness accounts of a funnel cloud and widespread reports of damage consistent with that of a tornado. The National Weather Service had issued a Tornado Warning on Thursday afternoon, but has not yet determined if a tornado actually formed.
The one fatality is believed to have been caused when a vehicle was overturned by the winds and landed on a person. There are also some reports of minor injuries in the area.
Trees across the area have been uprooted or blown over, and there are many reports of overturned vehicles and scattered debris. The storm caused major transportation issues around the city; the Long Island Railroad suspended all service west of Jamaica. Subway service was also affected across the city.
