In 1994, the nation watched in shock as Union County Sheriff Howard Wells announced the arrest of Susan Smith on two counts of murder in the deaths of her sons.
Fast forward 16 years, and a new case from Orangeburg County is drawing similarities from the Smith case. Both cases involve investigators questioning the mother's story of what happened.
Smith pleaded for the return of her young sons. She claimed a carjacker stole her car with her children in the back seat.
About one week later, investigators pulled Smith's car from the bottom of Lake John D. Long near Union with two young bodies strapped inside.
Wells and the Union County Sheriff's Department charged Smith with murder.
A jury convicted Smith of the murders of 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander. She is currently serving a life sentence.
Of course, the obvious difference in the two cases is that Smith was charged with murder, while the mother in Monday's case is charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
