Parsi New Year Celebrations 2010

The Parsi New Year would be observed on Thursday and President Pratibha Patil hailed the country a very prosperous and happy years ahead.
The president said: “The opportunity of Navroz, my greetings and good wishes to convey to all my Parsi brothers and sisters. May this festival strengthen our commitment to the synthesis, harmony and goodwill towards all.”
The Parsis celebrate this day with joy and laughter. They start the new year by praying to the fire temple and attracting new clothes. The Parsis also love to watch comedy plays. Many people like to look Parsi-Gujarati comedy genre during this festive season.
Farah Ghadialy, marketing professional said: “People want a good laugh and want their culture to the days of the festival to revive, so families buy tickets in bulk.”

Onam marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali. Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings the best of Kerala culture and tradition.
Onam festival is ten days and falls in the month Chingam (according to the Malayalam calendar) and is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety. People decorate their homes with fresh flower mats known as’ Pookalam “to the King Mahabali welcome. They wear new clothes, visit temples to offer their prayers to the gods and performing traditional dances such as Thiruvathirakali and Thumbi Tullal.
On Thiuruvonam day a big lunch called Onasadya. The ten days are meant for parties, boat races, songs, dance and merriment to welcome their king. Sumptuous home-cooked meals are served on plantain leaf and the sweet Payasam is the most common delicacies served during Onam. There are processions of caparisoned elephants, fireworks and Kathakali dancers. Many cultural and sporting events and carnivals are held during the season.
